The size of a download is not always visible before initiating the download. Many websites, especially download portals, displays file size and extension information on their download pages, while others may not display any information about the download on the download page. This leaves the user guessing, and sometimes even surprised at the size of the download. The file size in those cases is only displayed after the download has been started....

Google has proposed payments totalling $8.5m (£5.5) to settle a lawsuit brought over the Buzz social network.  Back in February the new social networking beta from the company caused controversy when users could see the contacts information for everyone they were already connected to. Several GMail users who were affected by the glitch sued Google over privacy issues, saying that…  Read More →

One of the first tasks after the installation of an operating system is the installation of security software to protect the computer from viruses and other forms of attack. Windows users can select programs from a huge available selection. They can install all-in-one solutions, often called security suites that combine antivirus, firewall and other security programs. Most security suites…  Read More →

A Twitter newspaper? How can that work considering that Twitter limits the number of characters to 140? That were my questions when I first heard about Paper.li, a web service that offers to create said newspapers for users of its website. Users who want to create their own newspapers need a free account, that they can create either with a Facebook or Twitter account. Those accounts are just used for verification and will not be used to create...

Although I am one to prefer a clutter-free, minimalist desktop, I know the majority of users prefer a much more standard, fast-access type of desktop. This means icons. Not the kind of icons you see on many users desktops (you know the ones, where there are so many icons it’s impossible to make sense of what is there), but icons that allow you to launch the applications you use most often. With KDE and GNOME there are different ways to...

Share Most Windows users who manage the services of their operating system do that either in MSConfig or in the Services management console. The latter offers descriptions and additional information that the System Configuration tool does not offer. Still, both applications lump all services together in one big list, which makes the configuration process tedious. The free Windows software Services Suite offers a in many aspects better solution....

Not logging out can be a huge privacy risk, especially on public computers but also on other computer systems that multiple users have access to. Why is that? Because everyone accessing the computer after the user may access that user’s profile on Internet websites. That was reason enough for Facebook to add a new option under the Account Security section that displays all devices and computers the…  Read More →

QTTabBar was one of the best, if not the best, tabbed browsing plugin for Windows Explorer. The original developer stopped working on the software in January 2009, and it became apparent with the release of Windows 7 that the original version of the program was not compatible with Windows Explorer in Windows 7. That was a huge problem for users who came to rely on the program’s functionality in …  Read More →

But first things first. Download Squad’s Lee Mathews was the first to report that the stable version of Google Chrome made the jump…  Read More →

Okay, so we’ve been dealing with LDAP a bit here on Ghacks, but mostly we’ve look at GUI tools (check out LDAP content on Ghacks ). All of the GUI tools are good, but nothing beats the command line for pure control and power. And what’s best, once you have LDAP installed, you have all the tools necessary to manage your LDAP data! There’s really no need for further installation. So, yeah…LDAP comes with it’s own...
